I've called 5 B&B's looking for a room for <name a weekend in the summer.> Is there something special going on in Ashland that weekend?

No, there is nothing special going on in Ashland that weekend. It's always like that on weekends in the high season. Weekend rooms when the Elizabethan Theatre is open (June to September) are very difficult to get unless you book months in advance. Many guests book a year in advance when they check out, others book when they order their tickets, in November or December.

What kind of food do you cook?

This is a hard question, since the real answer is that I cook things that I would like to eat if I were here on vacation. I always serve a fruit dish, a main course, and some kind of bread, such as toast, muffins, coffee cake, or the like. Meat is always on the side for the vegetarians among us. Some of the entree's that guests seem to like are Eggs Pacifica (eggs Benedict, with smoked salmon instead of ham), Puffed Pear Pancakes, and Dutch Babies with fresh local fruit. Of course I always consider dietary restrictions when setting my menu.

How far is it to the theatre?

Technically, it's about 7 blocks to the theatre. Most people walk it easily in 15 minutes. If I'm motivated, I can do it in about 10, but I have to walk really fast. Also, OSF is on the far side of Ashland, so it's about 4 blocks to downtown, and then 3 through town to OSF. If you are familiar with Ashland, I'm very near to Triangle park, which is catty-corner to Ashland High School.

How did you end up running a B&B?

Well, I'm originally from Redding, and Mom and I have been coming to OSF since I was a kid. We've always enjoyed Ashland, and Mom has always thought it would be great to have a B&B here. After graduating UC Davis in 1995, I moved back to Redding, and by 1999, I was looking to move away from Redding. The B&B was the perfect solution, I moved out of Redding, Mom got her B&B and a place to display her work, and she didn't have to move from Redding, which she doesn't really want to do. The best part of the deal was that I got a job that I really enjoy doing.

So your Mom doesn't live there? Are we going to get to meet her?

You never know, she usually shows up at least once a week during the high season.

Have you seen <insert name of OSF production here>?

Yes, I see all of the plays. Mom and I started going to all of the plays during the 1997 season, and I think we saw most of them in 1996.

Are you an actor?

No, I just have a loud voice, we leave the acting in the family to my wife Julie.
